Coimbra Group 3-Minute Thesis competition starts at JU

Coimbra Group 3-Minute Thesis competition starts at JU

On 1 February 2024 the first stage of the Coimbra 3-Minute Thesis JU started at the Jagiellonian University. As part of the competition, PhD students of Coimbra Group member institutions talk about their doctoral research projects during a 3-minute-long presentation in English.

The 2024 competition started with a short welcome address by the JU Vice-Rector for International Relations Prof. Dorota Malec, which was followed by 23 presentations delivered by PhD students, 10 of whom were selected for the university finals.

The Coimbra Group 3-Minute-Thesis (CG 3MT) competition is held at the Jagiellonian University for the fourth time. The participants are supposed to present their doctoral research in just 3 minutes, using only one slide. The contest is based on a concept developed by the University of Queensland, which quickly spread across Australia and New Zealand, and has since then gone global. It consists of two main stages, the first of which is held at the university level, followed by 3-Minute-Thesis European finals, organised by the Coimbra Group.

The university stage begins with the qualifying round, during which the Jury, consisting of JU authorities, doctoral school directors, as well as members of the Association of Doctoral Students and the Jagiellonian Language Centre, chooses authors of ten best presentations, out of whim winners of the first, second and third places are selected. They are awarded with research trips (up to) one month in length, the destination of which may be chosen from universities constituting the Coimbra Group.

Moreover, the winner of CG 3MT JU will be nominated by the Jagiellonian University to represent it in 3MT final, this year held in Turku. The winner of the final stage will receive a financial reward.

The JU final will be held on March 7. The event will be life streamed on YouTube. The Coimbra Group final in Turku will take place in early June. All important information is available on the JU Coimbra Group 3MT website.
