Palliative care debated at Auditorium Maximum

The conference was aimed to familiarize the participants with the concept of palliative medicine and its role in the care of terminally ill, stimulate reflection and discussion on this field of medical care, as well as encourage more people to get involved in hospice volunteering.

On 9 June 2015 the conference Palliative and Hospice Care: Medicine, Humanism and Volunteering was held in Auditorium Maximum of the Jagiellonian University. The opening of the conference was attended by the JU Vice-Rectors: Prof. Andrzej Mania, Prof. Maria Jolanta Flis and Prof. Stanisław Kistryn, JU Bursar Teresa Kapcia, Vice-Governor of Małopolska Voivodeship Wojciech Szczepanik and Head of the Society of Friends to People in Disease at St Lazarus Hospice in Kraków Dr Jolanta Stokłosa.

The opening address was delivered by the JU Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs Prof. Andrzej Mania, who stressed the great public importance and ethical value of hospice care and volunteering.

Then Vice-Governor Szczepanik read the letter from the Minister of Labour and Social Policy to the organisers of the conference and a short welcome speech was given by Dr Jolanta Stokłosa.

The conference was aimed to familiarize the participants with the concept of palliative medicine and its role in the care of terminally ill, stimulate reflection and discussion on this field of medical care, as well as encourage more people to get involved in hospice volunteering. The audio recordings of simultaneous interpreting of conference sessions are available below, along with the conference programme.

The Society of Friends to People in Disease at St. Lazarus Hospice was established in 1981, whereas the hospice building was completed during the years 1990-96, thanks to the generosity of members and friends of the Society. The hospice offers high quality palliative care and home care, and is supported by a palliative out-patient clinic, and a lymphoedema out-patient clinic. Besides, it provides support for the patients' families during the time of illness and mourning.

The event was organised under the honorary auspices of the Rector of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Wojciech Nowak and the Minister of Labour and Social Policy Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
