Polish consortium DARIAH-PL will join a European research project on digital humanities

Polish consortium DARIAH-PL will join a European research project on digital humanities

DARIAH-PL is the largest Polish humanities consortium to date. Currently, it comprises 18 institutions, one of which is the Jagiellonian University. Its aim is to develop and coordinate the cooperation of its members who employ digital infrastructure in their studies in the areas of humanities and art sciences in Poland.

As of 30 June, the Polish Council of Ministers declared DARIAH-PL ready to become a member of DARIAH-ERIC (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities – European Research Infrastructure Consortium), and European infrastructure which conducts international research on digital humanities. To finalise the process, approval of DARIAH-ERIC General Assembly is required.

Apart from the formal work regarding DARIAH-PL's accession to DARIAH-ERIC, the consortium is also engaged in its regular activities. They are geared towards developing research infrastructure in the field of humanities, which could be used in international projects. On 22–23 May 2015, members of the consortium met to discuss their knowledge and experience in digital humanities and infrastructure development. They also scheduled another conference to be held in autumn (26–27 November) in Lublin. The topic of the conference is Digital Humanities: Studying Text, Image and Sound.

Studying digital humanities is based on the use of digital technologies and tools to research the humanities and art sciences. It means both taking a closer look at the traditional issues related to a discipline and exploring new paths made available by the progress of technology.

DARIAH-ERIC currently consists of 15 founding members (Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Germany, Serbia, Slovenia, and Italy). After its accession, the Polish consortium will be the second largest one (after Germany).
