Funding for new therapies for inflammatory diseases

Dr Anna Więckowska, Prof. UJ from the Jagiellonian University Medical College and Prof. Izidor Sosič from the University of Ljubljana have won the OPUS 24+LAP/Weave call. In their project, they plan to obtain the first PROTAC-type compounds that degrade TAK1 and IKKβ kinases with anti-inflammatory properties. To carry out the research, the Polish team will receive funding of over 2 million zlotys from the National Science Centre (NCN).

The new University Hospital of the Jagiellonian University is the largest medical complex in Poland and one of the most innovative ones in Europe. Because of the application of state-of-the-art medical technology in diagnostics and treatment, the hospital has gained the status of a Siemens Healthineers reference centre, which allows Polish physicians, managers and technicians to undergo training at this institution and exchange knowledge and experience with its staff.

On 15 November 2023 the article ‘Computational prediction of complex cationic rearrangement outcomes’ was published in the prestigious international journal Nature. The paper devoted to the use of pioneering artificial intelligence methods in predicting chemical reaction mechanisms and outcomes was co-authored by Dr Sebastian Baś from the Jagiellonian University Institute of Chemistry.

Prof. Jacek Purchla was chosen to become the new president of the jury of the European Heritage Awards, the most prestigious award in the area of European cultural heritage presented since 2002 by Europa Nostra. Prof. Purchla has been the vice-president of the organisation since 2018.

What caused birds to develop such a wide variety of colours and how has it evolved throughout their evolution? These questions will be investigated by a research team led by Dr Miguela Carneiro from the CIBIO (Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources - InBIO Associate Laboratory) in Portugal.
