JU scientists help build a neutrino observatory

Hyper-Kamiokande is a neutrino observatory being constructed on the site of the Kamioka Observatory, near Kamioka, Japan. Among the main scientific objectives will be the search for proton decays, and to detect neutrino emission from astrophysical sources. Researchers from the JU Astronomical Observatory, Krzysztof Ziętara, Prof. Michał Ostrowski and Dr hab. Łukasz Stawarz, are involved in the Hyper-Kamiokande project.

On 9 October, JU Rector Prof. Jacek Popiel met with the Consul General of the Republic of France Cédric Peltier together with Magdalena Bożek from the Institut Français de Pologne à Cracovie. The meeting, held in Collegium Novum, was also attended by JU Vice-Rector for International Relations Prof. Dorota Malec and Director of the JU Institute of French Studies Prof. Wacław Rapak.

JU physicist to work on a project awarded by CHIST-ERA

The CHIST-ERA consortium has announced the results of the Open and Re-usable Research Data and Software (ORD) call, directed to international research teams carrying out projects related to open science in multidisciplinary perspectives. Amongst the nine winning teams there are five featuring Polish scientists, including one whose member is Dr hab. Andrzej Siódmok, Prof. UJ from the JU Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science.

JU MCB scientist to run a Polish-Swiss research project

Dr Tomasz Kościółek from the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University (JU MCB) will carry out research into human gut mirobiome in collaboration with partners from the University of Basel. His project has received funding from Weave-UNISONO scheme. The JU MCB team will receive nearly 2.4 million zlotys for their four-year project.

According to Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024, published on 27 September 2023, the Jagiellonian University is ranked in the range 601-800, achieving the highest score among 37 Polish higher education institutions taken into account, and maintaining the top position from the previous year.
