Kraków archaeologists carry on with their pioneering work in Israel

A team of researchers from the JU Institute of Archaeology of the Jagiellonian University led by Prof. Krzysztof Ciałowicz has begun another season of excavations in Israel. During the next month, they will investigate the Tel Erani site, where they have previously found well-reserved remains of a 5,000 year old wall.

Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences visit the SOLARIS synchrotron

On 17 July, a delegation from the Chinese Academy of Sciences visited the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS of the Jagiellonian University. The aim of the visit, which is a continuation of a previous meeting with representatives of the Chinese higher education institution, is to establish a framework for further cooperation in the area of synchrotron radiation.

Flowery meadows in our cities. Are there any risks for bees?

Current trends in urban design favour planting low-maintenance wildflower meadows in green spaces in cities due to their aesthetic qualities and apparent benefits for insects that struggle in an environment so utterly transformed by man. This seemingly ideal solution has a hidden catch: we’re not yet entirely sure how these urban meadows will affect pollinators in the long run. Dr Joanna Kajzer-Bonk from the JU Institute of Zoology and Biomedical Research currently runs a project aimed to determine the potential consequences of this design.

JU MC students dominate their competition at an international poster contest

Three students from the JU MC Institute of Public Health – Amanda Srsic, Semah Al-Awlaqui and Tara Chen – were unrivalled in the Poster Competition in Renes. Competing against several dozen other international students from various higher education institutions, they took first, second and third place. The winning posters were based on theses defended in Kraków three weeks earlier.

A tRNA modifier at work – JU researchers co-author an article in Science Advances journal

An international team of scientists from the JU Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology and two other research centres made a breakthrough discovery that will allow for a more complete understanding of one of the key mechanisms in ribosome-mediated protein synthesis. Their findings were published in the July 2019 issue of Science Advances journal.

8 July marked the 11th edition of the International Tournament for Young Mathematicians (ITYM). The Polish contestants, coached and supervised by the staff of JU Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Studies, took 3rd place out of 15 teams from all around the world.

From 1 to 7 July the Jagiellonian University Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs Prof. Armen Edigarian paid a visit to Kobe University, which involved meetings with its authorities, including the University President Prof. Hiroshi Takeda, and signed an agreement strengthening cooperation with this Japanese higher education institution.
