Academic Remembrance Day

The Academic Remembrance Day marks the 78th anniversary of Sonderaktion Krakau, the arrest of academics from the Jagiellonian University and other Kraków institutions of higher education by Nazi Germans

Each year, the academic community of the Jagiellonian University marks the anniversary of the treacherous arrest of 183 professors of the Jagiellonian University and other Kraków higher education institutions by Gestapo as part of the operation named Sonderaktion Krakau. The detainees were taken to concentration camps in Sachsenhausen.and Dachau, where over a dozen of them lost their lives. For two years, the Remembrance Day has been celebrated together with other academic institutions from Kraków.

  • unveiling of gravestones of Prof. Stanisław Zaremba and Prof. Leopold Jaworski, renovated on the initiative of the Committee for Maintenance of JU Professors' Graves
  • laying of flowers at the graves of deceased professors,

Salwator Cemetery

  • laying of flowers at the graves of deceased professors

  • laying of a wreath at the commemorative plaque

  • address by the Rector of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Wojciech Nowak,
  • address by the head of the Committee for Maintenance of JU Professors' Graves Prof. Jan Tkaczyński “O pożytkach płynących ze studiowania żywotów uczonych mężów” (On the benefits of studying lives of learned men),
  • recitation of Cyprian Kamil Norwid’s poem “Niewola” by the Rector of the PWST National Academy of Theatre Arts in Kraków Prof. Dorota Segda
  • reading of the Roll of Honour
  • laying wreaths under memorial plaques in Collegium Novum and under the Oak of Freedom

 

Accompanying events:

4 November, 12.00 noon - Rakowice Cemetery Chapel
All Souls’ Day of the Cracow University of Technology – Holy Mass for deceased professors, staff, alumni and students of the Cracow University of Technology, followed by the Memory March and the lighting of candles at the graves

6 November, 7.30. p.m. - St. Anne’s Collegiate Church
Holy Mass for the victims of Sonderaktion Krakau, members of Kraków academic community who died in the Second World War, and all professors, staff members and students of Kraków higher education institutions who passed away during the previous year. Music by the Choir of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Kraków
