Eminent specialists to visit the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology

This semester the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology  has invited two visiting professors: Prof. Toru Shimizu, Japan and Prof. Howard J. Halpern, USA. The guests, during their stay, will run 60-hour courses for students of biochemistry, biophysics and biotechnology.

Visits of international guests are incredibly enriching to students, who without leaving their country may benefit from the co-operation with world renowned experts, talk over their scientific projects and practise specialist English. Last year Prof. Claudine Kieda (France) visited the Jagiellonian University on the same basis.

Professor Toru Shimizu works for the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials in Tohoku University in Sendai in Japan. He is an eminent specialist in the field of biochemistry, hem, physiology of endothelium, redox reactions, and gas sensors. He's authored numerous articles in internationally renowned journals and worked for Journal of Biological Chemistry, Biochemical Journal.

His lectures and seminars will discuss the problem of hem proteins and gas sensors.  Prof. Shimizu  will have visited Kraków for the third time. Last year, during a three week stay, he took part in a second Congress of Polish Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

Professor Howard Halpern specialises in radiation and cellular oncology. He works for the Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology of the University of Chicago and the Department of Radiology of the Illinois University Hospital. He is also the director of the Center for Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Imaging in Vivo Physiology. Professor will lecture on cancer, the cutting-edge methods of cancer treatment and imaging, especially EPR imaging.
