Jagiellonian University appointed a shareholder in Fair GmbH

Pursuant to the international agreement on the construction of the FAIR accelerator facility (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) of 4 October 2010, the signing parties, including Poland, offered technical, scientific and financial assistance in the realisation of the project.

FAIR will be located in the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany. Thanks to FAIR, it will be possible to conduct a wider range of experiments than ever before. Scientists from all over the world will gain new insights into the structure of matter and the evolution of the universe since the Big Bang. Researchers working at FAIR will also have the opportunity to investigate antimatter, dark matter and hot stellar matter. FAIR will be able to generate ion beams, which occur naturally in cosmic radiation. This will enable scientists to study the effects of ion beams on materials and tissue samples for space exploration. Therefore FAIR will be a new and fascinating opportunity for qualified science under international cooperation.

The establishment of FAIR GmbH company was necessary to coordinate the construction of the accelerator and experiment facilities. The first shareholders are Germany, Russia, India, Romania, and the Swedish-Finnish consortium.

On 16 November by the decision of Prof. Barbara Kudrycka, Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education, the Jagiellonian University was appointed another shareholder in the Fair GmbH.
