JU Mathematician re-elected to Science Europe Governing Board

Prof. Zbigniew Błocki from the JU Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, the Director of the National Science Centre, will serve second term as a member of the Governing Board of Science Europe, an International Organization that brings together 43 research funding and research performing European institutions.

The Board is responsible for shaping and supervising the research policy of member organisations. Its members are elected for a two year term.

Science Europe, established in 2011, aims at supporting member organisations by increasing their role in shaping European research policy. The organisation is also a platform for cooperation between research institutions from Europe and other continents, as well as between scientific community and members of national and EU authorities. The organisation collaborates with a number of institutions at both local and European level, including the European Research Council, the European Commission, and universities.

Prof. Zbigniew Błocki has been an academic staff member of the JU Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science since 1990. He obtained PhD degree in 1995. In 1999 he stayed at Indiana University in Bloomington and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, within the framework of the Fulbright scholarship. During the period 2001-2002 he spent one year at the Max Planck Institute in Bonn and three months at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig. In 2006 and 2013, he was a visiting professor at Indiana University. He has also been frequently invited to give lectures at foreign academic centres (including Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Fudan University - Shanghai, Nagoya, Tel Aviv, Grenoble, the Indian Institute of Science – Bangalore, Uppsala, Tor Vergata – Rome, Vienna, Purdue University, the Australian National University - Canberra, and Institut de Mathématiques de Jussieu - Paris)

From 2010 to 2015 he was a member of the Council of the National Science Centre and in 2010-2013 he was part of the Main Board of the Polish Mathematical Society. Prof. Błocki has been a member of several other important scientific bodies, including the Scientific Councils of the Banach Center and the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as the Committee of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Ethics Committee of the European Mathematical Society. He was the Head of the Jagiellonian University Institute of Mathematics in 2011-2012 and the Vice-Chair of the 6th European Congress of Mathematics (held in Kraków in 2012). From 2010 to 2015 he coordinated the International PhD Programme of the Foundation for Polish Science Geometry and Topology in Physical Models. Currently he is the Principal Investigator in the project Pluripotential Theory and dbar within the framework of the Ideas Plus programme.

In 2007 Prof. Błocki received the Zaremba Award of the Polish Mathematical Society, whereas in 2008 he was granted the Prime Minister's Award for outstanding academic achievements. He is the author of several dozen research publications.
