Silver 'Plus ratio quam vis' medal for the French Consul General

On Tuesday, 7 July, the French Consul General Frédéric de Touchet has been awarded with a silver 'Plus ratio quam vis' medal by JU Rector prof. Wojciech Nowak for his contributions to the Polish-French relationship. The most important University award was presented to the Consul General in Collegium Maius. The event was attended by the University's Vice-Rectors and Deans, representatives of the diplomatic corps, local government as well as artists, researchers and educators.

According to the award motivation, Frédéric de Touchet has been presented with the medal for his personal contributions to various endeavours and initiatives organised jointly with the academic community, integration of the French Studies community and promoting French language and culture as well as his efforts in building peaceful French-Polish relations and fostering political, cultural, research and educational projects within the European Union.

In his opening statement of the first JU Senate session organised traditionally rather than on-line since the outbreak of COVID-19, Prof. Wojciech Nowak stressed the importance of the event to the academic community, as the Consul General was very actively engaged in the University life. 'We would like to honour a person who has done a lot for us and who is very dear do our hearts. We thank you for all these years of friendship', said the JU Rector. He recalled Emmanuel Macron's recent visit at the Jagiellonian University and the 'unforgettable unity of minds' on building a common European identity that he shared with the French president.

The laudatory speech was delivered by Prof. Wacław Rapak, Director of the JU Institute of French Studies. He briefly outlined both the history of the French Consulate General in Kraków as well as the biography of Frédéric de Touchet. 'From the very beginning of his cultural and diplomatic mission in Poland, he impressed everyone with the ease with which he assumed his new role', said Prof. Rapak. He also emphasised the great contributions of the Consul General to the development of Polish-French collaboration in the area of research, education and culture.

Frédéric de Touchet has graduated in Russian Studies from the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO). He began his career in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990. He occupied various diplomatic posts in Ukraine, Russian, Austria and Portugal. In 2009–2012, he was the Deputy Director for Human Rights and Francophonie at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On 1 September 2016, he was appointed the Consul General of the French Republic in Poland.
