JU students accepted for Fulbright internships

JU students accepted for Fulbright internships

The Polish-American Fulbright Commission has published a list of students selected for the 2023–2024 edition of the BioLAB porgramme, amongst which there are several students of the Jagiellonian University. Chosen students will be able to do year-long internships in renowned US research institutions in Austin, Charlottesville, Chicago and Oklahoma City.

The BioLAB programme is a research internship programme for students of the biological, chemical and medical fields of study. During the internship, students participate in current, important research projects under the guidance of experienced researchers in fields such as neurology, crystallography, virology and molecular genetics. The participants contribute to the programme by co-authoring papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, such as Nature, Proteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics or Acta Crystallographica. Additionally, the students also actively take part in the life of American universities, participate in seminars and guest lectures, and get to know American culture.

In this year’s edition of the programme, there was a total of 104 applications. Recruitment consisted of two stages: formal and substantive evaluation of the electronic application form, and interviews with the selection committee. This interviews were conducted in a hybrid format: in-person in Warsaw and Wrocław and online via Zoom. In the end, the Commission has selected 48 students from Kraków, Warsaw, Gdańsk, Poznań, Łódź, Gliwice, Szczecin and Wrocław. Among them there are 11 students from the Jagiellonian University:

  • Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation: Magdalena Jawor (JU Faculty of Biology); Agnieszka Machowska, Magdalena Makuch and Anna Szulta (JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology)
  • University of Chicago: Siarhei Yanushkevich (JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology)
  • University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center: Izabela Książek (JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology)
