On 11 August 2016 Maria Springwald, a student of Environmental Protection at the JU Faculty of Chemistry, won a bronze medal in women's quadruple sculls at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

On Wednesday, the Pope's visit to Poland began when Pope Francis, after attending a welcoming ceremony at the Kraków–Balice Airport, travelled to Wawel Royal Castle to meet with representatives of national and local government, the Catholic Church, diplomatic corps, and the academic community. One of them was Prof. Wojciech Nowak, the Jagiellonian University's rector.

Dr Sebastian Glatt awarded by the Foundation for Polish Science

The Foundation for Polish Science has just announced the winners of the First Team programme, the aim of which is to provide financial aid for research team led by young PhDs. The subject matter of the research has to have a high scientific or economic significance. Dr Sebastian Glatt, a researcher from the Jagiellonian University's Małopolska Centre for Biotechnology, received nearly two million PLN for his project, entitled "tRNA Modifications in Human Diseases".
