Oriental treasures of the Jagiellonian Library

The exhibition ‘Oriental treasures of the Jagiellonian Library’, organised to mark the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Jagiellonian University Institute of Oriental Studies, is part of an international conference entitled ‘Languages and Civilisations. Oriental Studies in Cracow 1919–2019’.

The Jagiellonian Library is one of very few Polish libraries that boasts a large collection of both printed matter and manuscripts related to the Orient. This fact is testament to the long-time interest in the Middle and Far East in Poland, which resulted in establishing the JU Institute of Oriental Studies one hundred years ago.

The collection of books on the Eastern history and culture includes old and modern prints as well as handwritten material, acquired from individual collectors, researchers, and Polish and foreign institutions. It is so extensive that it is very difficult to accurately assess the number of publications that could be categorised as ‘orientalia’.

The exhibition ‘Oriental treasures of the Jagiellonian Library’ features a selection of items representing the many different aspects of Oriental Studies. It includes books on Arabic countries, Iran, Turkey, India, China, and Japan. Polish researchers, globetrotters, and missionaries have travelled eastwards since the Middle Ages, bringing back diaries, memoirs, and even longer treatises. Very often, their journeys became inspirations for future research.

Amongst the items presented at the exhibition there are literary works, copies of the Quran, prayer books, dictionaries, diaries, historical and geographical documents, and maps.

The exhibition will be open on Monday between 10.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. and Tuesday to Friday between 10.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m.
