The seminar is part of the exhibition which is currently held in the Asia and Pacific Museum (Warsaw) entitled Jin, jiyan, azadi (Women, life, freedom) – daily life and social involvement of Kurdish women in Kurdistan and the diaspora, organised in cooperation with the Kurdistan Photolibrary. The exhibition has been arranged within the framework of the research project Activism and its Moral and Cultural Foundation: Alternative Citizenship and Women’s Roles in Kurdistan and the diaspora funded from Norway Grants as part of the Grieg programme of the National Science Centre, Poland.

“Chris Kutschera” is the pen name of the French couple Paul and Edith Maubec, who in the 20th century devoted much of their journalistic effort to the Kurdish people. While Paul was writing about the Kurds, Edith took photographs and initiated the online photo archive in order to make Kurdish life and history available in an insightful and visually rich form. Therefore, this exhibition is also a tribute to their work and efforts. According to Chris Kutschera: “Media, writers, publishers, students, researchers, and institutions are writing the history of the Kurds. But with the digitalized photos of the Kurdistan Photolibrary we add a tool to the study of Kurdish history, by providing illustrations that are accessible globally. Importantly, our goal has been to archive and preserve for current and future generations a continually expanding photographic collection.” The exhibition presents photographs by Chris Kutschera, but also by other authors and from various Kurdish archives.
