Atlas Stworzeń Wymarłych by Nikola Kucharska won the main awards in the Smart Book 2018 competition. The gala in JU Collegium Novum also featured the presentation of the Smart Book Website Editors’ Award, the JU Academic Community Award, and the Public Choice Award.

The Smart Book competition was organised for the fourth time by the Jagiellonian University and the Euclid Science Communication Foundation. The event is aimed at promoting the highest standards of popular science books published in Polish language. The “smart books” reflect researchers’ willingness to share their knowledge in an interesting and accessible way. The Euclid Statuette is a token of gratitude for their efforts in this field. The event organisers would also like to attract more popular science readers, including parents, for whom such books provide invaluable help in answering the most difficult questions asked by their kids.

The Euclid Statuette for the best popular science book for adult readers was awarded to the British science writer and journalist Ed Yong for his book I Contain Multitudes The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life, published in Poland by the Jagiellonian University Press. Using humour and witty comparisons, the authors takes the reader on a journey into the amazing world of microbiota and demonstrates its importance for life on Earth. He sheds light on the latest research on microbiota and provides insight into the fascinating lives of contemporary and historical scientists whose work contributed to discovering the secrets of the smallest and oldest organisms living on our planet.

Zwierzęta które zniknęły. Atlas Stworzeń Wymarłych – ‘Animals which disappeared. The Atlas of extinct creatures’ won the award for the best popular science book for children. The book authored by Katarzyna Gładysz, Paweł Łaczek and Joanna Wajs, and published by the Nasza Księgarnia publishing house contains detailed and interesting information about many extinct species, including insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, stressing the responsibility of human beings for the fate of animals.

The JU Academic Community Award went to the Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari for the book Homo Deus. A Brief History of Tommorrow, whereas Julia Shaw won the Smart Book Website Editors’ Award for The Memory Illusion. The readers of wyborcza.pl website decided to grant the Public Choice Award to Agnieszka Kossowska, the author of the book about children with disabilities Duże Sprawy w Małych Głowach.

The gala concluded with a discussion panel about challenges related to science communication, featuring authors, publishers and Smart Book jury members.
