JU student wins gold at Winter Universiade 2017

Snowboarder Weronika Biela, a student of the Jagiellonian University, won the gold medal in women’s parallel slalom at the 28th Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Weronika Biela is a student of the JU Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science and the JU Faculty of Astronomy, Physics, and Applied Computer Science. In the final, she defeated Maggie Carrigan from the USA. A day before, she took 4th place in parallel giant slalom, leaving the podium to two other members of the Polish team: Aleksandra Król and Katarzyna Sztofkisz.

In the battle for the gold medal, Biela triumphed over her opponent in both runs. In the first one she crossed the finish line 42 hundredths of a second before Carrigan and in the second one she was over 10 seconds better than the American athlete. 

Weronika Biela was born in 1991 and lives in Zakopane. She took up snowboarding 4 years ago. Prior to that she did alpine skiing.
