JU signs an agreement with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research

A cooperation agreement between the Jagiellonian University and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia was signed on 29 June 2018 in JU Collegium Novum. It envisages the construction and operation of the Laboratory for Structural Research into Macromolecules and New Materials at the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre Solaris.

The document was signed in Collegium Novum Senate Room by the Rector of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Wojciech Nowak and the Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research Prof. Victor Matveev.

The details of the planned cooperation and opportunities created by the new laboratory were presented by the Dean of JU Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science Prof. Ewa Gudowska-Nowak and the Director of the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre Solaris Prof. Marek Stankiewicz.

After the meeting, the JINR delegation took a tour of the most interesting places of the historic part of the Jagiellonian University, including the Collegium Novum Assembly Hall, the Professors’ Garden and the JU Museum Collegium Maius.

The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was established in 1956 as a response of the Eastern Bloc to the creation of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). However, as time went on, the two centres developed a successful partnership. At the moment, the JINR employs over 1,000 scientists from 18 member states: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the DPRK, Cuba, Moldova, Mongolia, Poland, Russia, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

The institute conducts fundamental research into particle physics, nuclear physics, and condensed matter physics. It is also active in the field of implementation of new technologies and education in the aforementioned areas.
