The Polish Academy of Science Biotechnology Committee has awarded Dr Katarzyna Magiera-Mularz from the Jagiellonian University with Professor Wacław Szybalski Prize for the best original research paper written by a young researcher published in a scientific journal.

Dr Katarzyna Magiera-Mularz from the JU Faculty of Chemistry was awarded for her paper Bioactive Macrocyclic Inhibitors of the PD-1/PD-L1 Immune Checkpoint, published in ‘Angewandte Chemie International Edition’.

The paper is the first to describe the mechanisms of macrocyclic peptide inhibitors directed at the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway and their relation to PD-L1 protein. The results published in the paper are an important contribution to PD-L1 research and its potential application in immunotherapy – the most promising novel anti-cancer method.

Professor Wacław Szybalski Prize is awarded annually since 2013 for the best experimental research paper written by a young researcher published in a national or international scientific journal in the previous year. Apart from a certificate, winners also receive 20,000 zlotys. They are also invited to present their research during a session of the Polish Academy of Science Biotechnology Committee.
