Centre for Bangladesh Studies to be established at JU

On 28 January 2018, the Jagiellonian University and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the Bangabandhu Centre for the Studies on Bangladesh, in order to encourage, support and develop education and research about Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi history, society, languages and culture. It will be the first such centre in Europe.

The document was signed by the Rector of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Wociech Nowak and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to Poland Muhammad Mahfuzur Rahman. The meeting participants also included the JU Rector’s Proxy for Internationalisation Prof. Adam Jelonek and Dr hab. Agnieszka Kuczkiewicz-Fraś from the JU Institute of the Middle and Far East.

The parties declared their intention to encourage, support and develop knowledge and understanding of Bangladesh, its history, languages, society and culture in Poland and Europe by creating the Baghabandhu Centre for the Studies on Bangladesh at the JU Institute of the Middle and Far East.

According to the agreement, the institute will launch new courses and build up library resources in the area of Bangladesh Studies and develop scholarly exchange is this field of study. It will also promote Bangladeshi culture in Poland as well as the knowledge of history, society and languages of Bangladesh by running a series of open lectures, accompanied by thematic film screenings and photo exhibitions.
