Students of JU Faculty of Law and Administration win the national round of Jessup competition

On 31 January-1 February 2020 a team of students of the Jagiellonian University Law and Administration won the national round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Competition, which took place in Warsaw in the Supreme Administrative Court of Poland, and will represent Poland in the international final rounds in the USA. Jessup is the oldest and largest moot court competition, which simulates a trial at the International Court of Justice. This year’s edition features more than 700 teams from more than 100 countries, including 5 from Poland. This year’s Jessup problem addresses the resolution of economic disputes, multi-fora international litigation, the accountability of heads of state for war crimes, and autonomous weapons systems.

The JU team, consisting of Roxana Krzyżowska, Bartłomiej Sendor, Justyna Sikora, Joanna Skrzypek, and Anna Zymuła, successfully went through the qualifier rounds and – for the seventh time during the last 8 years – participated in the national final rounds, in which they faced the team from the University of Warsaw. The jury, including Agata Rogalska-Piechota from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Prof. Tina Goletiani from Georgia, and Serhiy Petukhov, the former Minister of Justice of Ukraine. After a thrilling performance, the JU students won the national rounds by a unanimous decision and, as Polish National Champions, will go to Washington to represent the Jagiellonian University and Poland during the international rounds on April 12-18. The Jagiellonian University team were also recognised for the best written pleading.

The team has been coached by Dr Przemysław Rogucki from the Department of International Public Law of the JU Faculty of Law and Administration – a long time coach of JU teams competing in Jessup.
