JU researchers isolate the coronavirus from the Polish patient zero

Researchers from the Jagiellonian University Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology have managed to isolate and analyse the SARS-CoV-19 virus from the sample obtained from the first infected person in Poland.

It was announced on Wednesday that a team from the JU Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology in collaboration with the National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene in Warsaw have managed to isolate and analyse the coronavirus strain from the sample taken from the first person in Poland to have been identified as a carrier of the virus.

Analysis of different strains of the virus appearing in Poland will allow scientists to monitor its spread and identify any changes in its structure in order to prepare a proper response. Observing these changes may be vital for the development of drugs, methods of treatment as well as diagnostics. The sequenced genome will be released to public databases within a few days.

Research of samples from other SARS-COV-2 patiens is ongoing.
