JU lawyers achieve a historic success in Alona E. Evans Awards ranking

JU lawyers achieve a historic success in Alona E. Evans Awards ranking

At the Jessup 2020 Awards Ceremony, the team from the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Law and Administration took the highest place in the history of Polish participation in this competition. The JU students were ranked in the top 30 of the largest and most prestigious moot court tournament in the world.

Earlier this year (31 January-1 February), the JU team won the national round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Competition, which took place in Warsaw in the Supreme Administrative Court of Poland. As the Polish National Champions, they were to represent the Jagiellonian University and Poland during the international rounds on April 12-18 in Washington, which were unfortunately cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last Saturday, on April 25, the results of the latest Alona E. Evans Awards ranking were announced during the Jessup 2020 Awards Ceremony. The JU lawyers team took 29th place for the best written pleadings in the international rounds. The JU team consisted of Roxana Krzyżowska, Bartłomiej Sendor, Justyna Sikora, Joanna Skrzypek, and Anna Zymuła, who were supervised by Dr Przemysław Roguski from the Department of International Public Law of the JU Faculty of Law and Administration – a long time coach of JU teams competing in Jessup and Paweł Mateusz Gadocha (in the role of an advisor).

The Jagiellonian University in Kraków has a strong and successful tradition of participation in moot competitions. The JU has fielded teams for the Telders International Law Moot Court, the International Humanitarian Law Moot in Sarajevo, competitions in the field of commercial law, such as the Willem C. Vis Moot and the ICC Mediation Moot, and other tournaments.

In 2012/13 the JU debuted in the world’s biggest moot court competition: the Jessup. The JU team immediately achieved great success, winning the title of the Polish National Champions. It repeated this feat in 2013/14, confirming its strength and competitiveness. Given these achievements and the educational value of participation in such an event, the JU decided to field teams in the following editions of the Jessup. Participation in the Jessup Moot Court is open to JU law students who are currently in their third, fourth or fifth year of study. Since a Jessup team may consist of a maximum of five students, the prospective team members are selected in a recruitment process taking place in the beginning of the winter semester. The preparations for the competition take the form of a workshop and the students are awarded 8 ECTS points.
