The Polish-American Fulbirght Commission has announced the list of laureates of the BioLAB 2020–21 programme. Six students from the Jagiellonian University will carry out their year-long internships in leading research centres in Oklahoma, Chicago, Austin and Charlottesville.
The BioLAB programme is a one year internship for students of the biological, chemical and medical fields of study. During the internship students participate in current, important research projects, under the guidance of experienced researchers, at one of four selected American institutions: the University of Virginia, the University of Chicago, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
The results of research projects conducted during these internships are often the basis for articles published in reputable journals such as Nature, Proteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics and Acta Crystallographica. BioLAB grantees are also active participants in the academic and student life at their respective universities, taking part in seminars, guest lectures, and experiencing local culture.
This year’s competition comprised 102 applications. Recruitment consisted of two stages: formal and substantive evaluation of the electronic application form, and interviews with the selection committee. This year’s interviews were conducted exclusively via Skype, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
