Almost 200,000 euro for a project coordinated by JU researcher

Almost 200,000 euro for a project coordinated by JU researcher

In the 5th edition of the contest organised as part of the ERA-CVD Cardiovascular initiative, an international panel of experts has recommended funding a project featuring a researcher from the Jagiellonian University Medical College.

The project, entitled ‘Cerebrovascular-immune interfaces: searching for an immune signature coupling hypertension to cognitive dysfunction’, will be realised by an international consortium ImmuneHyperCog, which will be co-coordinated by Prof. Tomasz Guzik, head of the JU MC Chair and Clinic of Internal Medicine and Agricultural Medicine.

The main coordinator of the project is Prof. Giuseppe Lembo (IRCCS Neuromed, Italy), while his other colleagues include Dr Pablo Blinder (Tel-Aviv University, Israel), Prof. Turgay Dalkara (Hacettepe University, Turkey) and Dr Slava Epelman (University Health Network, Canada).

Within the framework of their collaboration, members of the consortium will investigate the mechanisms leading to cognitive disorders related to vascular dysfunctions, the immunological situation of hypertension patients, and the relations between the activation of immune system in the brain and neuronal activity.

Clinical as well as vascular research will help validate the potential therapeutic aims for the nervous, vascular and immunological system, in order to stop vascular cognitive disorders. JU MC scholars will focus on translational research, activation of the immune system in hypertension models as well as large-scale data analysis, including information acquired from UK Biobank.

The total amount of funds provided within the framework of the grant is 198,165 euro.
