JU team scores another success in INADR international mediation tournament

The Jagiellonian University Mediation Team, consisting of Karolina Chłopicka, Maciej Modrzyński, and Piotr Niski, took second place in this year’s INADR International Law School Mediation Tournament – the oldest such tournament in the world. The students of the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Law and Administration competed against several dozen teams from all over the world.

Preparations to INADR 2021 began in October 2020 under the supervision of the distinguished JU Faculty of Law alumni Agnieszka Góra and Jacek Czaja. During training sessions students analysed and practiced all elements of the mediation and negotiation process. Significant support was also provided by members of another distinguished law student team from the Jagiellonian University (Antoni Otałęga, Marta Nawrocka and Julianna Mielczarek), with whom this year’s participants have trained practical skills. Besides, they have studied lots of specialist literature on the subject.

The 20th INADR International Law School Mediation Tournament was held online on April 6-10. The competition consisted in simulating a mediation process, which featured two mediators running a co-mediation session, and two pairs of negotiators taking the roles of a lawyer and a client. Besides mediation and negotiation skills, the competitors had to use their knowledge of legal regulations and institutions. The tournament consisted of three stages. The first one featured 40 teams representing universities from all over the world, 16 of which advanced to the semi-final. During the final, the JU team faced law students from Ireland, India, and Canada, and ultimately took second place, between the Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto (1st place) and the Law Society of Ireland (3rd place).

This has not been the only such success recently achieved by the Jagiellonian University Mediation Team in the INADR International Law School Mediation Tournament. One year ago, the JU team, consisting of Marta Nawrocka, Elżbieta Schulz, Antoni Otałęga, and Michał Żyłka won the competition, outperforming almost 60 teams.

For over ten years, students of the Faculty of Law and Administration have taken part in a number of international competitions in the field of mediation, negotiation, as well as international trade and investment arbitration. Their common feature is that they all promote the means of so-called extrajudicial dispute resolution among law students. The skills acquired by the participants are useful for their future professional career. The faculty collaborates with law firms, whose staff share their knowledge and experience with the students.
