JU international student recognised among the best in Poland

JU international student recognised among the best in Poland

The Jagiellonian University student Lara Maria Guedes Gonçalves Costa was chosen one of the best international students in Poland in the Interstudent 2021 contest. The winners of the competition were announced during the online gala accompanying the international conference “International Students in Poland”. During the gala, the JU Rector’s Proxy Prof. Stanisław Kistryn was presented with the Internationalisation Star 2021 award.

Lara Maria Guedes Gonçalves Costa, who comes from Brazil, is a 3rd year student of International Relations and Area Studies at the JU Faculty of International and Political Studies. In the 11th edition of the Interstudent contest addressed to foreigners studying in Poland she won the award for the best undergraduate student.

As stressed by Dr Dominika Dziwisz, head of the JU International Relations and Area Studies (IRAS) programme, who had recommended the Brazilian student for the award, Lara is ambitious, hard working and communicative, eager to face new academic challenges, also active in the areas of management and charity. She is very popular among her fellow students and much valued by the academic teachers, for her commitment, competence, and initiating interesting academic debates. She actively collaborates with student organisations and prepared a very successful guidebook for Brazilian students on how to study in Poland, in collaboration with another JU IRAS student and the Brazilian Student Association (BRASA). She also contributed to the preparation of information materials for doctoral students from the Federal University of Alagoas, providing an opportunity for the expansion of academic exchange between this institution and the Jagiellonian University.

“Poland has become my new home. I am very grateful that I can be here, and all of my endeavours are a way of expressing my gratitude for what I received in Poland,” says Lara, who also devotes her time to helping the homeless as a volunteer in the Hanna Community in Kraków.

During the same gala, Prof. Stanisław Kistryn, the former JU Vice-Rector and currently the Rector's Proxy for Cooperation within the Framework of Una Europa, was presented with the Internationalisation Star award for special contribution to the internationalisation of higher education in Poland.
