Jagiellonian University featured in ARWU Top 500

Jagiellonian University featured in ARWU Top 500

On 15 August 2021, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy has released the results of this year’s Academic Ranking of World Universities. Also known as the Shanghai Ranking, the list features ten Polish Universities – two more than last year. As in the previous edition, the only two Polish higher education institutions to be featured in the Top 500 are the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw.

Both the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw have been classified in the 401–500 range (specific positions are announced only for the top one hundred universities). This means that the Jagiellonian University kept its position, while the University of Warsaw dropped from 301–400. Other Polish higher education institutions featured in the Ranking include: AGH University of Science and Technology (701–800), Medical University of Warsaw (701–800), Gdańsk University of Technology (801–900), Wroclaw Medical University (801–900), Warsaw University of Life Sciences (801–900), Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (901–1000), Warsaw School of Technology (901–1000) and Wrocław University of Science and Technology (901–1000).

The ranking is traditionally dominated by American higher education institutions. The top three universities this year are Harvard University, Stanford University, and University of Cambridge.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities has been published since 2003. Each year, the organisers rate universities around the world on the basis of objective indicators. These include the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university.
