The Jagiellonian University welcomes the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia

A meeting between JU Rector Prof. Jacek Popiel and the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Poland Saad Saleh Al-Saleh was the focal point of the visit of the Saudi Arabian diplomats to the oldest Polish University. The guests have also taken a tour of Collegium Novum and JU Museum Collegium Maius.




The meeting, which took place on 21 July in the Senate Room, also featured JU Vice-Rector for International Relations Prof. Dorota Malec, Dean of the JU Faculty of Philology Dr hab. Władysław Witalisz, Prof. UJ, and Head of the JU Chair in Arabic Studies Prof. Barbara Michalak-Pikulska. The Ambassador was accompanied by Mohammed Alhedaithy, First Secretary of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Poland.

Prof. Jacek Popiel discussed the historical relationships between the Jagiellonian University and Saudi Arabia, pointing out that the strong ties developed between are testament to the effective work of the JU Faculty of Philology, particularly the Chair in Arabic Studies and Institute of Oriental Studies as well as the academic community of the JU Medical College, whose researchers have been working with their Saudi Arabian partners for years. He also stressed that the cooperation between the Jagiellonian University and Saudi Arabia can also be further expanded in the area of political and historical sciences.

Prof. Barbara Michalak-Pikulska pointed out that the collaboration between the Jagiellonian University and the higher education institutions from Saudi Arabia was initiated in 2003 by the then-rector Prof. Franciszek Ziejka. His efforts were continued by the succeeding JU governance, including Prof. Wojciech Nowak, Prof. Piotr Laidler and Prof. Szczepan Biliński.

The participants of the meeting also discussed the forthcoming visit of Prince Turki Al Faisal Al Saud, planned for autumn. After the meeting, the guests were able to take a tour of the historical buildings of the Jagiellonian University.
