Her Excellency
Ms. Anna Louise Clunes
Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Poland

Your Excellency,

The Academic Community of the Jagiellonian University was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

As her extraordinary reign began in 1952, it is impossible to enumerate and discuss all of her many accomplishments in a brief letter. During the seven decades of her service, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II participated in the most important events of the 20th and 21st century, exerting great influence over the rapidly changing world. It is therefore beyond all doubt that her death is a great loss for that world.

I would like to assure you that the Academic Community of the oldest Polish university still keeps fond memories of Her Majesty’s visit to the historic heart of the Jagiellonian University, Collegium Maius, together with her husband, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on 27 March 1996. It is worth to remember that this event, remarkable for the citizens of Kraków, the Małopolskie voivodeship and the entire Polish nation, was attended not only by the Jagiellonian University authorities led by JU Rector Prof. Alekander Koj, but also the highest government officials: President Aleksander Kwaśniewski with his spouse, ministers of foreign affairs of both Britain and Poland as well as representatives of the local government, academic community and clergy.

On behalf of the Academic Community of the Jagiellonian University and myself, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy and offer my heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency and all British citizens.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Jacek Popiel
Rector of the Jagiellonian University
