HRH Prince Turki Al Faisal visits the Jagiellonian University

HRH Prince Turki Al Faisal visits the Jagiellonian University

On 11 October 2022 the Jagiellonian University was visited by His Royal Highness Prince Turki Al Faisal Abdulaziz Al Saud from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The visit marked the 90th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between Poland and Saudi Arabia, which was also commemorated by a special conference and exhibition.

The member of Saudi royal family was welcomed at the Jagiellonian University by the JU Rector Prof. Jacek Popiel and the Vice-Rector for International Relations Prof. Dorota Malec. After a meeting with JU authorities in Collegium Novum Senate Room, Prince Turki Al Faisal officially opened an exhibition commemorating the visit of his father, His Royal Highness Prince Faisal Al Saud, in Poland in 1932. Price Faisal, the future King of Saudi Arabia, was then received in Warsaw by Marshal Józef Piłsudski and decorated with the Polonia Restituta Medal by President Ignacy Mościcki.  The visit is widely considered the establishment of bilateral relations between Poland and Saudi Arabia.

During his visit at the Jagiellonian University, prince Turki Al Faisal also attended a conference in Collegium Novum marking the 90th anniversary of the abovementioned Prince Faisal’s visit to Poland. The event participants, who included ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, and the United Arab Emirates, were officially welcomed by the JU Rector Prof. Jacek Popiel. In his address, Prince Turki Al Faisal briefly presented the history of Polish-Saudi relations, stressing the importance of showing respect towards other cultures and religions in successful diplomacy. He also pointed to the role of academics in forming friendly relations between nations and called for the development of closer collaboration between the Jagiellonian University Institute of Oriental Studies and the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, founded and chaired by the Prince. The speakers also included the Head of the JU Chair in Arabic Studies Prof. Barbara Michalak-Pikulska, whose address was devoted to the history of Polish-Saudi diplomatic relations, as well academic cooperation, in which her Chair plays an active part.

After the conference, Prince Turki Al Faisal visited the historic building of Collegium Maius, where a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Jagiellonian Library and the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies. The Prince was shown historic manuscripts and other precious items from the Jagiellonian Library collection, and later took a tour of the Jagiellonian University Museum Collegium Maius.

The cooperation between the Jagiellonian University and Saudi Arabia includes research and educational activities carried out by the JU Institute of Oriental Studies as well as JU Medical College staff’s active collaboration with Saudi partners. During the last few years, the Jagiellonian University was visited Saudi delegations, including members of diplomatic corps and higher education governance. It is also worth noting that the current Head of the JU Chair in Arabic Studies Prof. Barbara Michalak-Pikulska was a member of the academic board of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Center for Arabic Language in Riyadh in 2013-2016.
