European Commission grant for JU Medical College

European Commission grant for JU Medical College

The European Commission has awarded over 5 million euro, including almost 400,000 for the Jagiellonian University Medical College, to an international research project I-CARE4OLD, the aim of which is to develop and validate prognostic algorithms using AI to predict health care outcomes and modify pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies for the elderly living at home and in assisted living facilities.

The full name of the project is Individualized CARE for OLDer Persons with Complex Chronic Conditions in home care and nursing homes. Research team members will make use of existing databases containing information about more than 50 million people living in Europe, United States and Canada.

The project aims to improved the clinical decision-making processes regarding chronically ill elderly patients, thanks to high quality, internationally validated predictive algorithms related to disease trajectory and therapy outcomes. One of the goals is to create an international online platform for health care professionals, particularly doctors, that would allow for planning therapies based on the aforementioned predictive models.

The project is coordinated by Dr Hein van Hout from the VUMC in Amsterdam. The Polish part of the team is led by Prof. Katarzyna Szczerbińska, head of the JU MC Section for Research on Aging Society.

The project will be carried out until 2025.

More information is available on the project’s website.
