Austrian Consul General visits the Jagiellonian University

On 23 February, the Consul General of the Republic of Austria Martin Gärtner visited the oldest Polish university. The meeting, hosted by JU Rector Prof. Jacek Popiel and JU Vice-Rector for International Relations Prof. Dorota Malec, took place in the Rector’s Office in Collegium Novum.

Prof. Jacek Popiel began the meeting with a brief overview of the Jagiellonian University’s history as the oldest Polish higher education institution. He also emphasised the importance of the new Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the Jagiellonian University Revival, which houses the Faculties involved in exact and environmental sciences, for the international recognition of the University.

Prof. Dorota Malec discussed the Jagiellonian University’s ongoing and close collaboration with Austrian academic institutions, both when it comes to joint research projects and student mobility programmes. She also stressed the achievements of the School of Austrian Law at the JU Faculty of Law and Administration, adding that the oldest Polish university is ready to sign agreements with more Austrian higher education institutions and research centres.

The Consul General spoke about his visits to Jagiellonian University research units such as the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology and the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS. He also collaborated with two of the University’s faculties: Faculty of International and Political Studies and Faculty of Law and Administration. He assured of the Consulate’s readiness to support any and all initiatives that would result in improving the relationship between Polish and Austrian academic community.

The meeting ended with a discussion on the World Copernican Congress and a short tour of Collegium Novum and its painting collection.
