The projects will be funded within the framework of the POLONEZ BIS programme addressed to researchers who come to Poland from abroad They are among five projects selected for funding from the reserve list in the programme run by the National Science Centre.

During his stay at the Jagiellonian University, Dr Tom Whyman, who was awarded as part of POLONEZ BIS 1 scheme, will carry out the project Climate Change, Parenthood, and the Virtues of Hope, in which he will explore Hannah Arendt’s concept of ‘natality’, defending it in relation not only to Aristotelian ethics in general, but also to what the author identifies as three ‘virtues of hope’: charity, solidarity, and modesty, with the aim to show how understanding these concepts can contribute to meaningful action against the climate disaster, and how parenthood and raising children are vital parts of that.

The winners of POLONEZ BIS 3 include Dr Cillian Ó Fathaigh. During his research stay in Kraków he will run the project Recognizing Injustice in the Digital Public Sphere, as part of which he will analyse the forms of agency and community that emerge online. It will investigate the different understandings of belonging, beyond the concept of citizenship and reflect on the importance of the public recognition of injustice, considering how norms of accountability, justice and anonymity are negotiated online.

Altogether, the grants were awarded to five projects from the ranking list, due to the cancellation of their prospective projects by one POLONEZ BIS 1 winner and three POLONEZ BIS 3 winners. The reserve lists were approved by teams of experts and include applications which previously had not received funds allocated by the National Science Centre for projects in a given group of disciplines, due to budget constraints.
