Dr Piotr Bystranowski granted Fulbright Senior Award

On 18 December 2023 the Polish-US Fulbright Commission announced the winners of the Fulbright Senior Award 2024-25 programme. Among them is Dr Piotr Bystranowski from the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University. During his research stay in the United States, he will carry out the project ‘Measuring Meta-Interpretation’ at Georgetown University, Washington DC, in collaboration with Prof. Kevin Tobia.

‘The project focuses on using natural language processing tools, including large language models, to analyse historical trends in judicial statutory interpretation methods. In the project we are using large databases of court rulings, such as the database of American federal court rulings, consisting of over 1.7 million texts. I will carry out my research at faculties of Law, Linguistics, and Computer Science of the University of Georgetown”, says Dr Piotr Bystrowski.

The Fulbright Senior Award is a scholarship programme allowing people employed at Polish academic and research institutions to conduct independent research projects or research-educational projects in host institutions in the USA. As announced by the Polish-US Fulbright Commission, the applications could be submitted until 16 June 2023. 101 applicants took part in the contest, 16 of whom were nominated for the grant. The winners include researchers from Kraków, Warsaw, Wrocław, Łódź, Poznań, and Gdynia.   

Dr Piotr Bystranowski is an assistant professor at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Ethics of the Jagiellonian University. His research focuses on text mining techniques in law and philosophy. He graduated in law, philosophy, and completed the programme European Master in Law and Economics In February 2021 he defended his PhD thesis in Law. He conducted research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Surrey Centre for Law and Philosophy at the University of Surrey. He is currently running a project ‘Nieznajomość prawa - badanie z jurysprudencji eksperymentalnej’ (Ignorance of the law – a study on experimental jurisprudence), which received funding from the OPUS programme of the National Science Centre.
