On 6 July 2015 at 10.00 a.m., the Jagiellonian University was visited by representatives of the University of Concepcion (Chile). The delegates were received by Prof. Wojciech Nowak, JU Rector.
The delegation consisted of Prof. Sergio Lavanchy Merino, University of Concepcion Rector, Prof. Mario Suwalsky, researcher at the UC Faculty of Chemistry and honorary consul of Poland in Concepcion, and Dr Ivan Araza Gomez, Head of the UC Department of International Affairs. The meeting was also attended by Prof. Kazimierz Strzałka, Head of the JU Department of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry.
The participants discussed the possibility of future cooperation between the Jagiellonian University and the University of Concepcion in the areas of biotechnology, chemistry, astronomy and language teaching, as well as student and staff mobility. The lengthy cooperation between Prof. Strzałka and Prof. Suwalsky, dating back as far as the late 1990s, would provide solid foundations for potential collaboration.
The attendees also discussed current social and political situation of Poland and Chile, compared the legislation concerning higher education institutions in those countries, and debated on modern economic threats.
The next meeting is scheduled to take place in the coming year in autumn.
