On Thursday, 16 July 2015, the Washington Wizards team member Marcin Gortat and several other players from the National Basketball Association (NBA) paid a visit to the Children's University Hospital in Kraków and met with the young patients. The meeting in the rehabilitation room of the hospital's Physiotherapy Department was organised by Marcin Gortat's charity foundation.
The most famous Polish basketball player was accompanied by a group of NBA stars including Nicole Powell, Bo Outlaw, Neal Meyer, and Otto Porter, as well as the Washington Wizards coach David Adkins. The meeting was also attended by members of US Embassy and Consulate: Drew Alejandro, Joanna Kapica and Janina Galas.
The visit by such extraordinary guests was greatly enjoyed by all the patients. There was time for individual conversations, group photos, autographs, as well as a prize competition with awards funded by the American diplomats.
The Children's University Hospital in Kraków is an important medical, educational and research centre, collaborating with the JU Medical College Institute of Peadiatrics. It has 27 wards with over 500 beds and provides complex medical care, including treatment, diagnostics and rehabilitation, to patients from infancy to 18 years of age from Małopolska and neighbouring districts.
