I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life by Ed Yong and Zwierzęta które zniknęły. Atlas Stworzeń Wymarłych by Nikola Kucharska won the main awards in the Smart Book 2018 competition. The gala in JU Collegium Novum also featured the presentation of the Smart Book Website Editors’ Award, the JU Academic Community Award, and the Public Choice Award.

Drug resistance – a global problem of the 21st century

Diseases and other health related issues are indiscriminate and can affect everyone, no matter their age or environment. Currently, one of the most serious threats to our health is the risk of infection by harmful microbes that have become resistant to commonly used antibiotics. We asked Prof. Jadwiga Wójkowska-Mach from the JU MC Department of Bacteriology, Microbe Ecology and Parasitology to tell us more about the underlying causes and consequences of drug resistance.

JU scientists make artificial intelligence more intelligent

Prof. Jacek Tabor from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, along with his colleagues Prof. Maciej Nowak from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science and Prof. Tadeusz Marek from the Faculty of Management and Social Communication, have received a 4.5 million euro grant from the Foundation for Polish Science. Their interdisciplinary team will work on a project entitled Biologically inspired artificial neural networks.
