The Holocaust between Global and Local Perspectives

On 4-26 November 2020 the 10th conference in the Genealogies of Memory series will take place, organised annually by the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity. The title of this year’s meeting is „Holocaust between global and local perspectives”. The conference, organised in partnership with the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Polish Studies, brings together researchers from various fields from all over the world.

The conference series Genealogies of Memory is one of the main projects run by the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS) in collaboration with academic partners. It aims to foster scholarly cooperation by creating an international platform for dialogue and exchange of research experiences between scholars representing various generations, schools, methodological strategies and research practices.

The jubilee edition of the conference has been devoted to the current state of Holocaust memory research. The issues discussed by the participants will include globalisation and universalisation of the meaning of the Holocaust, the recently postulated empirical turn in Holocaust (memory) studies towards primary texts and sources as well as local spaces and materialities (e.g. forensic studies, environmental Holocaust studies), and the use of a grounded research perspective with regard to Holocaust memory and education.

This year’s speakers include Omer Bartov (Brown University, Providence, RI, USA), Piotr Cywiński (Państwowe Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland), Ewa Domańska (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland and Stanford University, USA), Jackie Feldman (Ben Gurion University of the Negev), Dorota Głowacka (University of Kings 'College, Halifax, Canada), Éva Kovács (Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, Austria), Mindaugas Kvietkauskas (Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania) and Daniel Levy (Stony Brook University, Nowy Jork). The full programme is available on the ESPS website.

Due to the coronavirus epidemic the conference will be held online and streamed on the ENRS YouTube and Facebook channels.
