Meeting of Coimbra Group Executive Board

Meeting of Coimbra Group Executive Board

On 19 November, the Jagiellonian University began hosting a two-day meeting of the Executive Board of the Coimbra Group, an association of the oldest and most prestigious European higher education institutions. The aim of the meeting is to discuss the details of the upcoming General Assembly and Annual Conference, the network’s two most important events, which will be held in Kraków next year.

The meeting was opened by JU Rector Prof. Wojciech Nowak. He recollected the first visit of Coimbra Group representatives, which took place during the 650th Jubilee of the Jagiellonian University in 2014. ‘Next year’s conference is important not only for the Jagiellonian University, but all Polish higher education institutions. Close collaboration is paramount in the era of globalisation. President of France Emmanuel Macron recently stressed this fact, calling for tightening of the ties between European universities’, said Prof. Nowak.

‘Thank you for inviting us and for organising the conference. In these difficult times of division and strife, it is ever more important to cooperate within university networks. We are sure both this meeting and the conference will prove fruitful’, said Prof. Ludovic Thilly from Poitiers University, President of the Coimbra Group Executive Board.

The Executive Board meeting at the Jagiellonian University is attended by:

  • Prof. Ludovic Thilly, Poitiers University, President,
  • Prof. Jürgen Barkhoff, Trinity College Dublin, Vice-President,
  • Prof. Luca Verzichelli, University of Siena, Treasurer,
  • Prof. Efrem Yildiz Sadak, University of Salamanca,
  • Prof. Dorota Malec, Jagiellonian University in Kraków,
  • Prof. Daniel Donoghue, Durham University,
  • Prof. Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho, University of Coimbra,
  • Prof. Lenka Rovná, Charles University in Prague,
  • Inge Knudsen, head of Coimbra Group in Brussels.

The first part of the meeting also featured the members of the conference organising committee: Prof. Piotr Laidler, Prof. Zdzisław Mach, and Dr Natasza Styczyńska.

Founded in 1985 and formally constituted by Charter in 1987, the Coimbra Group is an association of 39 long-established European multidisciplinary universities of high international standard. The Coimbra Group is committed to creating special academic and cultural ties in order to promote, for the benefit of its members, internationalisation, academic collaboration, excellence in learning and research, and service to society. It is also the purpose of the Group to influence European educational policy and to develop best practice through mutual exchange of experience.

The Jagiellonian University joined the Coimbra Group in 1991. In 2014, JU Rector Prof. Wojciech Nowak suggested that the conference be held at the Kraków Alma Mater, which met with enthusiasm of both the Executive Board and the member universities, resulting in the organisation of the General Assembly and Annual Conference in Kraków on 5–7 June 2019.

The Jagiellonian University is actively engaged in Coimbra Group. As JU Rector, Prof. Wojciech Nowak belongs to the Rectors’ Advisory Group, and will become its president starting from next year’s General Assembly. JU Rector for University Development Prof. Dorota Malec is a member of the Executive Board, chosen on 1 June 2018. Additionally, University staff are part of several Working Groups: Academic Exchange and Mobility (Dorota Maciejowska – group president), Social Science & Humanities (Prof. Zdzisław Mach – group vice-president), Development Cooperation (Prof. Marek Frankowicz), Education Innovation (Dr Jacek Urbaniec), Employability (Agnieszka Dudziak, Olga Frey), Heritage (Dr Agnieszka Ślaga), Latin America (Dr Marta Kania) as well as Life Sciences and STEM (Prof. Wojciech Froncisz).
