On 25–30 July, the 27th edition of the International Mathematics Competition for University Students (IMC) was hosted at the University College London. Although due to the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak this year’s contest was held online, it attracted a record number of 546 participants form over 130 countries. Among them there were seven students from the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science.
The competition is directed to students completing their first, second, third or fourth year of university education, with a maximum age of participants being 23 years. The problems, chosen by the International Problem Selection Committee, are from the fields of Algebra, Real and Complex Analysis, Geometry and Combinatorics.
The competition was attended by seven students form the JU Faculty of Mathematics and computer Science:
- Vladyslav Zveryk (first prize, pos. 16–21.)
- Jan Fornal (first prize, pos. 37–52.)
- Azur Đonlagić (first prize, pos. 37–52.)
- Anatoli Shatsila (first prize, pos. 55–60.)
- Radomił Baran (first prize, pos. 63–68.)
- Nikolay Sheshko (second prize, pos. 118–123.)
- Radek Kusek (honourable mention, pos. 293–312.)
Aside from individual classification, the participants were divided into 96 teams. The teams put up by the Jagiellonian Universities – ‘Jagiellonian Sharks’ and ‘Jagiellonian University’ – were classified as 6–7. and 13., respectively.
Jagiellonian University students have obtained the highest scores among the Polish participants of the competition, outperforming the representatives of the University of Warsaw and the AGH University of Science and Technology both individually and in teams.
The participation of five out of seven JU students was funded by the ‘Programiści przyszlości 4.0’ grant. The students were supervised by Dr Leszek Pieniążek and Dr Jakub Byszewski from the JU Institute of Mathematics.
The individual winner of the competition is Stanislav Krimskii from the Saint Petersburg State University. In the team classification, the two best scores were achieved by the Israeli national team (234 points, first place) and the Saint Petersburg State University Team (233.67 points, second place).
