JU lawyers team up with the Clooney Foundation for Justice

JU lawyers team up with the Clooney Foundation for Justice

JU Faculty of Law and Administration has begun collaborating with the Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ). They will be working together on monitoring legal actions that may carry the risk of violating human rights. The project will allow students to gain knowledge and experience in an international environment. Its JU coordinators are Dr Daniel Książek and Dr Wojciech Górowski.

CFJ works against injustice by enforcing responsibility for human rights violation around the world and assisting people that have been persecuted by the government. To this end, it has created the TrialWatch programme. CFJ also works to expose corruption that would lead to violation of human rights and provides support for groups that are marginalised or subject to prejudice. It helps children in need of education and refugees that have been forced out of their homes to start a new life.

The collaboration was initiated by the CFJ, which constantly tries to expand its reach globally. In late 2020, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration Prof. Jerzy Pisuliński has signed an agreement that made Jagiellonian University’s participation in the TrialWatch programme a reality. The programme is coordinated and monitored by experts tied to the Human Rights Institute at Columbia Law School. More information about the programme and CFJ is available at the Foundation’s official website.

‘Human rights are a key aspect in our society, and their importance has never been more obvious. We’re happy to participate in an international project that analyses and assesses cases of human rights violations on a global scale. We’ll definitely try to set up a larger meeting in Kraków’, said Dr Daniel Książek.

It is worth mentioning that Jagiellonian University Student Legal Clinic will also be a part of the University’s collaboration with CFJ. The Clinic is an institution established in 1997 in order to help those that cannot afford paid legal assistance. The students will attend trials, make notes and consult with their mentors to make sure all court rulings are made in accordance with human rights laws.

According to Dr Wojciech Górowski, current issues related to abortion and LGBT communities are affecting various aspects of human rights. As he pointed out, the situation in Poland has attracted the attention of various international media outlets and other institutions. Last weekend, a lecture at Yale University was devoted to women’s rights in Poland.

‘We can see the number of people at the protests. Some of the attendees may soon face legal charges. Therefore, we want to monitor institutions related to law in Poland. We hope that in our observations we’ll come across nothing out of the ordinary’, said Dr Górowski.

Prof. Jerzy Pisulliński stressed that the Faculty of Law and Administration has a long history of defending human rights. In 1990s, Prof. Zbigniew Hołda discussed human rights aspects of penitentiary law and was an active member of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights. Two JU professors, Tadeusz Zieliński and Andrzej Zoll, served as Polish Commissioners for Human Rights. Additionally, Prof. Krzysztof Wojtyczek and Dr hab. Michał Kowalski, who are both lecturers at the JU Chair in International Law, are judges of the European Court of Human Rights.

‘In the coming months, we’re going to establish the Centre for Human Rights, an institution focused on education and research in the area of human rights that has, in fact, already been functioning for the last several years, albeit under a different name. We aim to provide knowledgeable and unbiased advice in cases where violation of human rights might occur. We’ll also try to offer students lectures and classes related to practical aspects of human rights protection’ said Prof. Pisuliński.
