14 JU students and PhD students will participate in a one-year internship in prestigious research institutions in the USA: University of Virginia (Charlottesville), University of Chicago (Chicago), University of Texas: Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas), and Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (Oklahoma City). The list of laureates of the BioLAB 2021-22 programme was announced on 8 April 2021 by the Polish-U.S. Fulbright Commission.
The BioLAB programme is a one year internship for students of biological, chemical and medical fields of study. During the internship the students participate in current research projects in such areas as crystallography, virology, or molecular genetics, under the guidance of experienced researchers, at one of the selected American institutions. The results of this research are often published in articles in prestigious scientific journals, such as Nature, Proteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics, or Acta Crystallographica. The BioLab interns take active part in the life of American Universities, participate in seminars and guest lectures, and become familiar with the US culture.
The laureates receive a scholarship worth 29-33 thousand dollars. They will be also provided with medical insurance and assistance in obtaining a US visa (the cost of the visa is covered by he student), as well as an opportunity to prepare for the internship under the guidance of the Fulbright Commission staff and the programme alumni.
As announced by the Polish-U.S. Fulbright Commission, 78 applications were submitted as part of this year’s edition of the programme. The recruitment process consisted of two stages: formal and substantive evaluation of the electronic application form, and interviews conducted by the selection committee. This year’s interviews were carried out exclusively online, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 42 laureates include 14 JU students and doctoral students, whose names are listed below:
