JU Rector’s letter to the academic community of the Jagiellonian University

JU Rector’s letter to the academic community of the Jagiellonian University

In response to the rising tide of COVID-19 cases, JU Rector Prof. Jacek Popiel has introduced a more restrictive set of measures regarding security and safety at the Jagiellonian University. He lists these measures in his letter to the academic community, which is available for reading in this article.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases, during the last Rectors’ and Deans’ committee special session I have decided to make temporary changes in the functioning of the Jagiellonian University from 21 January until the end of the winter semester.

  1. Deans of faculties and heads of other teaching units have been authorised to shift on-site classes to the remote form via distance learning and online teaching platforms. Classes that require specialised and laboratory equipment or involve practical skills can still be conducted as usual. The same holds true for research activities necessary to prepare for tests and theses. In every case, the form of the class must be based on the specific requirements of each study programme.
  2. I have ordered the heads of teaching units to employ online teaching tools to carry out tests and exams. If a specific study programme requires face-to-face examinations, the details of such examinations need to be discussed with the students, and proper security measures need to be enforced (e.g. large rooms, social distancing).
  3. The Jagiellonian University Chancellor has made decisions regarding the working arrangements of the University’s administration based on the announcement No. 35 of 17 November 2021, which enables remote work as well as shift-based on-site work, taking into account the individual timetables of employees. All administrative units will function normally, with the minimum number of staff possible working on-site.
  4. Heads of faculty and institute units have been obligated to set working arrangements for non-teaching staff in accordance with the rules laid out in point 3.
  5. In the cases where it is not possible for non-teaching staff to carry out their duties remotely, they will work on-site, following pandemic safety regulations.
  6. I have obligated the heads of University units to disseminate information about these new working arrangements using websites and e-mails.
  7. I remind you that Jagiellonian University staff, students, doctoral students and any third parties staying within the University premises are obligated to cover their mouth and nose with face masks in all common spaces. Additionally, students and doctoral students must use face masks during classes and lectures while on the University premises.
  8. I remind you that all staff, students and doctoral students are required to immediately report SARS-CoV-2 infection by mail or phone to persons specified in the points above.

With kindest regards and wishes of good health,

Prof. Jacek Popiel
Rector of the Jagiellonian University
