European Endometriosis Masterclass at the JU University Hospital in Kraków

European Endometriosis Masterclass at the JU University Hospital in Kraków

For the first time, the practical training sessions related to the diagnostics of advanced stages of endometriosis in women organised four times a year under the auspices of the European Endometriosis League was hosted in the University Hospital in Kraków. It provided an excellent opportunity for gynaecologists to share their knowledge and exchange experiences.

It is estimated that endometriosis is a condition that affects about 10% of women of reproductive age. Its symptoms include severe pain as well as problems with gastrointestinal and urinary tracts, greatly affecting the everyday life of women. Very often it is also a cause of infertility.

‘The biggest problem with endometriosis is that its symptoms are often non-specific, and endometrial changes are difficult to register via imaging. As a result, patients, especially those in more advanced stages, called deep infiltrating endometriosis, can wait up to 10 years for proper diagnosis and treatment’, said Dr hab. Paweł Basta from the Jagiellonian University Medical College Clinic of Gynaecology and Oncology and Chair in Gynaecology and Obstetrics.

The workshops hosted at the University Hospital in Kraków are attended by 21 gynaecologists and 7 experts from all over Europe. During three days, they will discuss the latest information on the diagnostics and treatment of endometriosis and participate in surgeries. ‘That is the most valuable part of the workshops. We have performed 5 surgeries, during which we‘ve shown various types of the disease and ways of treating them. Doctors attending the training will be able to see for themselves how the best health care professionals in Europe deal with severe cases of endometriosis’, stressed Dr hab. Paweł Basta.

March is the Endometriosis Awareness Month.
