A new microscope in the SOLARIS synchrotron

A new microscope in the SOLARIS synchrotron

Photothermal Spectroscopy Corp has completed the installation of the mIRage-LS, Submicron Multimodal (IR+Raman+FL) microscope on the CIRI beamline in the Jagiellonian University National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS. The microscope features such functions as submicron imaging and IR + Raman spectroscopy combined with wide-field fluorescence imaging capabilities.

CIRI beamline supervisor Dr Tomasz P. Wróbel worked with PSC to develop a customised probe beam polarisation/Raman beam polarisation capability that when paired with the inherent IR polarisation, provides for a unique, submicron polarised vibrational micro-spectroscopy tool to explore molecular orientation in materials with a level of detail previously not possible.

Furthermore, the mIRage-LS submicron multimodal microscope will serve well in supporting the wide range of experiments often conducted at synchrotrons, particularly in fields such Life Sciences, where its submicron and hence sub-cellular IR resolving powers - now coupled with fluorescence imaging to help 'guide' the measurements, for both fixed and live samples (cells, bacteria, tissues, bone etc.) - will open up lots of new and exciting research possibilities.

The installation of the microscope expands the research capabilities of the SOLARIS Centre in the areas of materials science, polymers science, environmental studies, cultural heritage studies and geochemical studies.

More details available on the CIRI beamline's website.
