JU students succeed in the regional edition of a prestigious programming contest

Students of Analytical Computer Science from the JU Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science took 2nd place in the Central European Regional Contest – the first tier of ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. The team consisted of Vlad Hlembotskyi, Franciszek Stokowacki, and Michał Zieliński.

Ireneusz Białek elected to the Ashoka Fellowship

Ashoka, world’s largest and most prestigious network of social innovators, has elected Ireneusz Białek, head of the JU Disability Support Service and president of the Managers of the Future Foundation, as one of its members. Other Ashoka Fellows include Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, Carlo Petrini, initiator of the Slow Food movement, and Paul Rice, conceiver of the Fair Trade certificate.

JU among the founders of the League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources

On 13 November, 16 institutions representing 19 European research centres met in Brussels to sign an agreement establishing the League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources (LEAPS). The event was attended by Robert-Jan Smits, representative of the European Commission and Director-General for Research and Innovation. Prof. Marek Stankiewicz, Director of the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS, was amongst the agreement’s signatories.

Article by JU biologists published in Circulation Research

A paper by a research team led by Dr hab. Ewa Zuba-Surma from the Department of Cell Biology of the JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology was published in the prestigious cardiology journal “Circulation Research”. The title of the article is “Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived extracellular vesicles are safer and more effective for cardiac repair than iPSCs”.

Many people laugh at offensive jokes based on negative stereotypes of certain groups, such as miserly Jews, lazy blacks, or thieving Poles. Others, however, think that such jokes are in bad taste, crude, and even detrimental to society. Could they be right? Can a particular type of humour be unacceptable from a moral point of view? We asked Maciej Juzaszek, a PhD student at the JU Institute of Philosophy and Chair in the Theory of Law, to provide us with an ethics-oriented answer.

The summit in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, was attended by delegations of the Jagiellonian University, led by JU Rector’s Proxy for Internationalisation Prof. Adam Jelonek and the University of Warsaw, led by Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations Dr hab. Maciej Duszczyk. Students of both universities were also present at the meeting.
