JU student wins bronze medal at Rio Olympics

JU student wins bronze medal at Rio Olympics

On 11 August 2016 Maria Springwald, a student of Environmental Protection at the JU Faculty of Chemistry, won a bronze medal in women's quadruple sculls at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The Polish team, which also consisted of Monika Ciaciuch, Agnieszka Kobus and Joanna Leszczyńska, were leading in the final race, going for a gold medal. Yet, maintaining such an ambitious pace proved too exhausting and just a few metres from the finish line they were overtaken by German and Dutch teams.

The Rio Olympics medal is not the first success of Maria Springwald, who has won two bronze medals in quadruple sculls European championships: in 2014 in Belgrade and in 2015 in Poznan. She is also a silver medal winner of the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Linz, as well as a multiple medalist in Polish championships.

Congratulations!
