University Hospital among European pioneers in Gynaecological Oncology

University Hospital among European pioneers in Gynaecological Oncology

The Chair and Clinic of Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology of the University Hospital in Kraków received the prestigious accreditation from the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO), consequently becoming the European Training Centre in the field and the first unit in Poland which achieved this status.

The certificate provides doctors from the University Hospital with great opportunities to improve their skills in the area of diagnostics and treatment by attending international training courses and exchanging experience with specialists from all over the world. The accreditation also proves that the Department of Gynaecology and Oncology of the University Hospital fulfils its mission in accordance with the highest standards of medical practice.

The Department of Gynaecology and Oncology comprises 65 beds and admits over 5,600 patients per year. It is the only unit in Małopolska region that provides complex oncological treatment to pregnant women who have been diagnosed with cancer. In addition, the Department constantly improves the availability of low-invasive methods of radical surgical treatment for cancer of female reproductive tract. Following international trends, most surgical interventions in this field, except for ovarian cancer, is performed by laparoscopy. Besides chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the patients also have access to state-of-the-art treatment methods, such as brachytherapy.

“The European Society of Gynaecological Oncology accreditation for the Clinic of Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology is the second international accreditation received by a unit of the University Hospital, after our Breast Unit was awarded with certificate of the Senologic International Society. This illustrates the aspirations and development of the hospital ... It also shows how the hospital benefits from the cooperation with the Jagiellonian University Medical College. The intellectual and teaching passions of the medical staff directly translate to our clinical achievements”, says Barbara Bulanowska, Director of the University Hospital in Kraków.
