7th Days of American Culture have begun

7th Days of American Culture have begun

This year's edition of the Days of American Culture focuses on the issue of the U.S. military and its participation in armed conflicts over the centuries.

April 22 saw the opening of the 7th Days of American Culture at the Jagiellonian University Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora.

The participants were welcomed by the JU Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs Prof. Andrzej Mania, who stressed that the event has been organised for students and by students. In his address, he pointed out that what is most extraordinary about the United States is not its military and economic potential, but its culture.

"It is impossible not to notice the immense power of American culture, which is omnipresent. Even its harshest critics must recognise its potential. This dominance, which sometimes can be disturbing, has been easily accepted. It is up to us whether and how we can benefit from its positive elements and protect ourselves against the harmful aspects,"  Prof. Mania said.

Then the participants listened to the opening address by Kathleen Morenski, Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw, followed by Dr Dominika Dziwisz's lecture on cyber-security policy of Barack Obama.

The seventh edition of the Days of American Culture, entitled American War. Politics, Culture, Society, focuses on the issue of the U.S. military and its participation in armed conflicts over the centuries. The programme includes an academic conference and the screening of a film Lone Survivor. The detailed schedule (in Polish) is available on the 7th Days of American Culture website.
